NFTs offer a new way for creatives to earn an income from their work. However, the minting fees can prevent some creators from venturing into creating, promoting, and selling an NFT. Fortunately, there are ways to create and sell NFTs for free.
Read on to find out how to make NFTs for free and sell them without spending anything.
How to Make an NFT for Free on Rarible: A Step-by-Step Guide
To guide you though how to create an NFT for free, we will use Rarible as an example platform. Rarible is a leading Ethereum-based platform for creating and selling NFTs.
Rarible supports many wallets, including WalletConnect, Coinbase Wallet, Torus, Portis, Beacon, and Install Temple. We’ll be using MetaMask for this example.
Visit Rarible and click on the connect wallet option in the top right corner.
Once you select your preferred wallet (MetaMask in our case), a popup window will enable you to complete the process.
Once connected, the site will prompt you to enter your display name and email address and accept the terms of service to complete the sign-up process.
You are now ready to create your first NFT for free.
Click on the “create” button at the window’s top right corner.
Select NFT from the drop-down menu and choose your preferred blockchain network between Ethereum, Polygon, and Tezos. In our case, we chose Ethereum.
You can create a single NFT or multiple, depending on your needs. Let’s go with single for this example.
Now upload your MP3, MP4, WEBP, GIF, or PNG file. Ensure that the file size does not exceed the 100MB size limit.
Once uploaded, preview the file and choose between a fixed price or a timed auction. You must set the price for a fixed price, while a timed auction requires the minimum bid indicated.
Be sure to select the free minting option to ensure the buyer pays the gas fees when minting the NFT.
Fill out the rest of the details as appropriate, and remember to select the percentage of royalties you wish to receive from all future sales. Once done, click on the “Create item” button.
Once the upload process is complete, a popup window from your crypto wallet will prompt you to sign the message. Your NFT is now ready.

Top NFT Marketplaces for Gasless Minting & Selling
The two leading NFT marketplaces, OpenSea and Rarible, both offer the option of gasless minting, where you pass the cost to the buyer.
OpenSea achieves gasless minting by pushing transactions to the point of purchase. The on-chain transfer of the NFT takes place during the first purchase. Termed “lazy minting,” the process allows users to create single NFTs or collections for free.
Rarible also enables NFT minting at the moment of purchase. Before the first purchase, the platform stores the NFT data on decentralized storage called IPFS. Once a creator’s NFT has been bought, it is minted, and the buyer pays for the gas fees.
Creating, promoting, and selling a free NFT is easy, thanks to platforms like OpenSea and Rarible. While interest in NFTs has waned recently, talented creators from all around the world continue to earn revenue from their digital art and collectibles, and free minting is making that more inclusive.
