Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried has officially signed documents agreeing to be extradited to the U.S.
A Reuters report disclosed that Bankman-Fried told a Bahamas judge that he would waive his right to contest his extradition on Wednesday. Local media outlet Our News reported that Bankman-Fried was sent back to the Bahamas Department of Corrections shortly after because the plane which would take him back to the U.S. was yet to arrive.
In agreeing to extradition, Bankman-Fried has concluded his stay in Bahamas’ Fox Hill prison which was widely reported to have some of the harshest living conditions for inmates. However, the FTX founder’s eight night stay doesn’t appear to have been quite as uncomfortable as most would have pictured, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday.
Bankman-Fried was housed in the prison’s sick bay for the entirety of his stay, where he had access to running water, a toilet, air conditioning and cable television. The report also noted that this wing of the prison had considerably better food options, where Bankman-Fried was served vegan food.
His stay was made more comfortable by the air conditioning from the inspector’s office in the vicinity of his cell. He hads also been allowed to play crossword puzzles, watch cable TV and read the local newspapers. Prison officials told Bloomberg that Bankman-Fried spent his days watching TV news and reading news articles about himself.
Contrary to the public perception that Bankman-Fried changed his mind on fighting extradition due to unfavorable living conditions in a Bahamas prison cell, the decision seems to be tied to an expectation that he will be allowed bail in the U.S. instead, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said to Bloomberg.
