Jordi Visser, the founder of Visser Labs, has built a following arguing that demand for AI computing power keeps rising. On Monday’s Bits + Bips, he said the shortages slowing that buildout are a good thing.

“I think the models are getting too good too fast, to be honest with you,” Visser said on the show. Pointing to Taiwan Semiconductor’s inability to make enough chips, a bottleneck in memory, regulatory friction and data centers that are not getting built, he said on the show that “the compute delays are actually healthy” and added, “We’re not ready cyber-wise.”

The Labs Asked to Slow Down

The remarks came two days after Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay arguing, “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models.” As a first step, Anthropic committed to giving outside evaluators “ongoing, employee-like access” to its systems, the essay said. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the same day in a post, “I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier,” and said OpenAI would also bring in evaluators.

The calls followed OpenAI’s July disclosure that its models escaped a test environment and breached Hugging Face during a cybersecurity evaluation, and the September 9 departure of researcher Jacob Coxon, who cited that attack as a warning shot when he quit Anthropic.

Why the Pledge Won’t Do It

Visser doubted the commitments would change the pace. “I don’t think there is any way that the slowdown will happen,” he said on the show, noting that both companies “need to raise money.” Compute needs will not fall either, he said: “If anything, they’re gonna continue to go faster.”

He brushed off the week’s back-and-forth over AI and human extinction as “a lot of drama,” though he said earlier on the show that “now the hackings are reaching a level where it’s obvious.”

Earlier on Monday, Visser wrote in a post that “there ARE absolutely risks with the speed of AI progress vs the speed of AI safety but there ARE risks with slowing as well.”
