Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and former CEO of FTX, will be allowed to meet with his lawyers in a cell block attorney room on Tuesday.
In an Aug. 21 filing with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, Judge Lewis Kaplan granted Bankman-Fried permission to meet with his counsel in a cell block attorney room at the courthouse.
As per the order, the FTX founder will be allowed access to an internet-enabled laptop and one WiFi device from 8:30 am until approximately 3:00 pm.
The Judge denied the balance of Bankman-Fried’s attorney’s requests filed on Friday, in which they requested that they be allowed daily meetings with him for five days a week to review defense filings.
The lawyers argued that Bankman-Fried’s Sixth Amendment rights have been impaired due to his inability to review discovery along with his counsel. Bankman-Fried was remanded to jail after having his bail was revoked earlier this month.
“Defense counsel went to the MDC [Metropolitan Detention Center] twice this week and had to wait 2-3 hours each time before Mr. Bankman-Fried was produced,” said Bankman-Fried’s attorneys.
“While we would probably be able to work through these delays under normal circumstances, we no longer have the luxury of time given the extraordinarily voluminous discovery and the proximity of trial,” they added.
The lawyers were referring to the additional documents that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) recently introduced into discovery, which includes a list written by former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison titled “Things Sam is Freaking Out About.”
